While Norfolk Southern hasn't confirmed the precise route the train took from its original departure near the Missouri border in Madison, Illinois, the train picked up a crew in Toledo, Ohio. Any route the train took on its way to Conway, Pennsylvania, At 8:12 p.m., roughly 18 miles northwest and 42 minutes before the derailment, a security camera at industrial equipment supplier Butech Bliss in Salem, Ohio, captured footage of flames at the bottom of one of the freight cars.

The site has continued to be the center of an intense cleanup. Satellite imagery released by Maxar Technologies Wednesday captured burned-out trains organized into areas on either side of the tracks, and blue containers for hazardous materials were present south of the tracks.A network of streams meandering roughly 20 miles south connect the immediate area of the derailment to the Ohio River, though the impact appears to be largely contained.
