Houston All-American guard Marcus Sasser, who is nursing a groin injury, will be a game-time decision for Thursday’s NCAA Tournament opener against Northern Kentucky.

Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson talks to guard Marcus Sasser during a practice ahead of the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, in Birmingham, Ala. Top-seeded Houston play No. 16 Northern Kentucky in a first-round game to open the tournament.BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — They are coming off a rare loss and could open the NCAA Tournament without their star player.

“Whether Marcus is here or not, we’re still Houston,” Sampson said. “You have a responsibility to play to our identity.” “He did some things today,” Sampson said during a news conference inside Legacy Arena. “Broke a sweat. Did some shooting drills. He didn’t go full speed. So that’s the update. I don’t know. We’ll see. Game is at 8:20 p.m. It’s one of those infamous game-time decisions, I guess.

Sasser, voted the school’s first Associated Press first-team All-American since Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984, suffered the groin injury in Saturday’s semifinal win over Cincinnati and was held out of the title game as a precaution. An MRI came back negative for any structural damage.
