The last time the Ridge Point boys track and field team sent a relay to state, it finished second to a Marshall team putting the finishing touches on its first state championship., medaling in both the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay as part of a fourth-place finish in the team standings.
"I'm very proud of this group," Marshall coach Lloyd Banks said following Friday's state competition."They overcame a lot this year. We lost a lot from last year, and for us to be in this position we're in this evening, it's all about the kids. They wanted it, they worked their tails off, and they got it done."
They won their first three postseason races in the event, highlighted by a 39.80 at the District 19/20-5A area championships that is tied for the second fastest in Texas high school history, according to the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association. The Panthers finished behind Marshall in the 400 at two regular season meets but were faster at state, with the team of Tylan Johnson, Ashton Bethel-Roman, 110 hurdles qualifier Mason Dossett and open 100 qualifier Cayden Broadnax running a 40.58. It was good for bronze, behind only Klein Forest and Duncanville in 6A.
