Martin Kahan directed music videos in the ‘80s and ‘90s with a who's who of rock and country, from Kiss to Rush, Bon Jovi and Kenny Chesney.
Almost immediately, Columbia Records came calling with an assignment, for Scandal’s “Love’s Got a Line on You.” It was the first of many major label promos, and Kahan would become one of the record company's go-to directors. Over the following years, he’d shoot videos for Ian Hunter , Clarence Clemons , Loverboy , Michael Bolton , Eddie Money, Heaven, Fastway and more.
As the music video format entered its golden age, Kahan’s eponymously-titled production company delivering the goods for the booming MTV platform, including clips for Bon Jovi , Mötley Crüe , The Firm with Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers , Scorpions , and others. Also, Kahan directed the first music videos by KISS featuring the members without makeup, “Lick It Up,” and “All Hell’s Breakin’ Loose”.
Kahan wasn’t pigeonholed by rock. The country music scene would be a fruitful one for Kahan, who, by the mid-1980s, had cut CMT-friendly country music video assignments for John Anderson , Sawyer Brown , Ricky Skaggs and others. The Nashville hits kept coming through the ‘90s, as Kahan worked on Alan Jackson’s award-winning “Chattahoochee” and hit multiple assignments for the likes of Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams, Jr., and Kenny Chesney.
Chesney’s “I Lost It” from August 2000 would prove to be Kahan’s final turn as a director, as a series of health problems would plague his final years.“In his final years in Lakewood,” recounts his close friend Arthur Levy, CEO of Yidstock Ventures, “Kahan never stopped theorizing about country music’s gradual downsizing of its promo video output, and how he could work his way back into the fold.”
