Scorsese considers this Orson Welles movie cinema.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Legendary director Martin Scorsese praises a 57-year-old drama for having the all-time greatest cinematic battle scene. The auteur returns this year with a 3.5-hour epic, Killers of the Flower Moon. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, and Lily Gladstone, the crime drama explores the mysterious murders of Osage tribe members in the United States. Killers of the Flower Moon is set for release on October 20.

Speaking with Time, Scorsese reveals his favorite action sequence of all time. For Scorsese, the honor of “the best battle scene ever put on film” goes to Orson Welles’s 1966 drama, Chimes at Midnight. According to the director, this scene is entirely distinct from other action sequences on the big screen. Check out the quote from Scorsese below:

“I think if you’re gonna to look at Welles, I think you should go to Chimes at Midnight. There are so many different levels to the film. Out of this ‘Shakespearean’ play comes this extraordinary filmmaking. As far as action scenes are concerned, the best battle scene ever put on film is in Chimes at Midnight. I know the guys who did Braveheart studied it, I know we studied it a lot. It’s different from Eisenstein, it’s different from Alexander Nevsky, it’s different from Potemkin of course.

How Will Chimes At Midnight Influence Killers Of The Flower Moon? Chimes at Midnight is a loose Shakespearean adaptation based on Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I, Henry IV, Part II, and Henry V. Although critically acclaimed, the movie is often overlooked in Welles’ oeuvre, overshadowed by works such as Touch of Evil, The Lady from Shanghai, and his magnum opus, Citizen Kane.

Scorsese’s close study of Chimes at Midnight exemplifies his status as a well-watched film director who draws heavily upon film history when making his own work. Inspirations like that of Chimes at Midnight will likely boast anticipation for Scorsese's upcoming movie, as Killers of the Flower Moon trailer establishes a bloody, action-filled tale that will experience its fair share of battle sequences.
