As glimpses of Marvel's near future introduce a mutant Spider-Man, it seems Peter Parker will soon die and be resurrected with the X-Gene.

All signs suggest that Marvel will soon transform Spider-Man into a mutant - but he may need to die for this to happen. In Marvel’s main continuity, Spider-Man is a human hero, granted superpowers after being bitten by a genetically altered spider. However, upcoming events seem set to reinvent him as an X-Men-style mutant, potentially even with new powers.

Marvel recently announced more information for its Fall of X event, coming August 2023. Included in the reveal is a new upcoming series titled Uncanny Spider-Man. In Marvel comics, 'Uncanny' is synonymous with mutants, honoring the long history of the X-Men using the adjective Given the series will connect to Fall of X, fans know that Spider-Man will soon be very firmly entangled with the mutant cause.

Indeed, Steve Rogers’ Captain America was brought back during the Judgment Day event. However, this is only possible on a large scale if humans are given a 'limited X-gene' - essentially making them mutants on the genetic level.

This means that at least in the future of Sins of Sinister , Spider-Man at some point becomes an official mutant. This is supported by Jed Mackay, Patch Zircher, Salvador Larroca, Jay Leisten, and Greg Land's Timeless #1, in which fans saw a very similar version of Spider-Man in a glimpse at Marvel's near future.

Spider-Man's Mutant Status Needs a Sacrifice However, the real purpose of the 'limited X-gene' is to make it possible to resurrect humans when they die. It's unlikely Peter Parker will volunteer for experimental genetic tampering just for the thrill of it, however he would likely accept this gift if he was about to die and it was the only way to return.
