A Captain America from the future makes the infamous photon energy shield look good while being a testament to Steve Rogers' legacy.

Captain America's photon shield is not a fan-favorite accessory for Marvel's star-spangled Avenger, but a Captain America from the future uses Steve Rogers' hated shield, and it totally works. Kiyoshi Morales, who goes by the codename Commander A, is the Captain America of the year 2410, and he uses a photon shield on both arms to help Steve Rogers and a cadre of heroes against a villain kidnapping versions of Steve Rogers from across the multiverse.

Captain America's photon energy shield was developed by Tony Stark, and was most recently seen in the 2021 miniseries The United States of Captain America. While this electric shield may look cool, Cap quickly discovers a major drawback to it when it shorts out upon exposure to water. Commander A manages to redeem the unpopular shield because of the way he uses it and because it makes sense for the futuristic hero to have a futuristic shield.

Captain America, Man of Tomorrow The benefit to using the photon shield instead of using one of Cap's more iconic shields is that it isn't ever-present. Early on in the series, Commander A is bound by a web-like substance and when he engages one of his shields it cuts through the webs as it deploys. Commander A, unlike Steve or U.S. Agent who have both wielded photon shields at some point, has one on each arm.

Commander A being from the future helps to redeem the photon shield, but he is also a lot like Steve Rogers. He is brave but not boastful, he is strong but not quick to start a fight, and he genuinely feels honored to help people. The final scene of the miniseries takes place in 2410 as Commander A is christening the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Steve Rogers, and he speaks of legacy.
