1996's DC Versus Marvel is remembered for some great fights, but fans also learned a huge fact. The series identified the most important hero from each universe, crowning Batman for DC, and Captain America for Marvel.
Out of all the superheroes in both Marvel and DC, there are two–one from each universe–who stand above the rest as the most important, and the Amalgam Universe names them specifically.
The Amalgam Universe is the combination of the Marvel and DC realities that stemmed from the four-part miniseries DC Versus Marvel. In the story, two cosmic gods who are brothers become aware of the other’s existence. One of them presided over Marvel while the other DC. However, it turns out these two gods were supposed to be one deity, and the fact that they were split was a cosmic mistake.

Every amalgamated hero was reverted to their original forms, yet the Amalgam Universe was still intact, as the gods had not yet decided which world would stay and which would be deleted from existence.
Batman and Captain America acted almost as representatives from their respective universes. The brother-gods looked into their origins, where they saw true tragedy, hardship, loss, and pain. Then, they looked at the heroes they became, and they saw hope, triumph, leadership, and the pursuit of good even at the expense of their own lives.
The fact that Batman and Captain America were chosen to be the ones to save the Marvel and DC universes is enough to name them as the two most important heroes without even getting into their specific heroics, marking them definitely as the two best heroes ever.
