Mass shooting survivor says ask for 'small favor' led to unthinkable tragedy in San Jacinto County
, as they had on many Friday nights, so they’d be in place to head out Saturday morning to a job for the family’s electrical business. The people in the house were members of a tight-night Honduran family. On a street, they had created a home away from home in a place that reminded them of their rural village in Honduras.
Earlier that Friday, a boy in third grade was watching TV in the front room of his family’s home. His newborn cousin was sleeping in a car seat nearby when the next-door neighbor began firing his AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in his front yard, according to Ramiro Guzman, who lived at the home. The gunshots startled the infant awake. The kids were scared. The baby boy began to cry.The four men who were heading out to work the next day decided they’d try to intervene.
They asked if he could move away. “We thought he’d be mad if we said don’t shoot, so we said, ‘Don’t shoot so close to our garden,’” Guzman recalled. “ said, ‘Just do it farther from us.’”Guzman said the neighbor got mad. “He said he was going to do what he wanted because it was his property,” he told the Houston Chronicle in Spanish during a phone interview on Sunday.
Ramiro Guzman, his wife and their baby took cover under a blanket in a closet and survived. Casarez’s girlfriend, Julisa Molina Rivera, 31, was slain in the master bedroom where she and Diana Velazquez Alvarado were shielding multiple surviving children. Alvarado also died.
