Matt’s Mail: Why isn’t John Klingberg signed and what to make of Joe Pavelski’s situation? | MDeFranks

For the Stars to pass on Klingberg, they will have had to make at least two calculations, and not cap-related calcualtions.

In December, Pavelski talked about how much his family has enjoyed Dallas, including the youth hockey scene for his son Nate. Back then, he said his preference is to re-sign in Dallas. It’s also a matter of preference for Pavelski: one-year deals or term, stay comfortable in Dallas or go ring-chasing elsewhere like Corey Perry or Thornton, leave money on the table to help the roster or maximize earning potential that he’s earned throughout his career?

They’re in a playoff position by points percentage right now. Shockingly, the Stars could even have a shot at the first wild card spot in the Western Conference. They entered Friday six points behind Nashville with two games in hand. With a win over Chicago on Friday night, suddenly the path towards the first wild card spot looks much better than it did even a week ago.

If you want to see all in, look at the Penguins every season for the last decade. They’ve had one first-round pick in the last seven drafts. Look at the Maple Leafs. They have three total draft picks in the upcoming draft. Look at Tampa Bay and Vegas. Each of them didn’t worry about salary cap concerns and made the numbers work by either using long-term injured reserve, or paying teams in draft capital to retain salary. They traded prospects away often. That is not the Stars.

Cap-wise, the Stars are in decent shape, but not in a perfect position. They currently have $1.083 million in cap space. If they send down Thomas Harley and Tanner Kero, they could have $2.697 million of room. If they found a taker for Anton Khudobin, they could have $3.822 million in cap space. Nill has been here since 2013. While he’s made some great moves he’s also made some bad ones. Do you think it’s time for a new vision for this team? It’s an interesting exercise trying to judge Jim Nill’s tenure in Dallas.

Now, where I would like to see more from management is finding undervalued players from other organizations. Either prospects that haven’t lived up to expectations, or waived players, or restricted free agents that become available. Under Nill, the Stars have done a good job of transitioning rosters from one window to the next , but it’s also left them perennially on the playoff bubble.
