We reflect on the legacy of Dragonslayer with director Matthew Robbins upon the release of the remastered edition, creating commentary with Guillermo del Toro, and the film's original influences:

Dragonslayer follows Galen Bradwarden, a young wizarding apprentice who must help a village that is being terrorized by a dragon. The king has been sacrificing young, virgin women to appease the dragon. Galen will find an unexpected wealth of courage and use the magical amulet that grants him powers to defeat the dragon.

Matthew Robbins on Dragonslayer Screen Rant: What are some of your favorite memories from working on Dragonslayer? Matthew Robbins: I think something has been lost, but I don't attribute it to what you're saying. I attribute it to storytelling and screenwriting. "I'm sorry, Mr. Robbins, you can't do that. Sorry." The full-scale pieces that were sent from the Disney workshop, they were inoperable. They barely survived. It was insane the torment that we had when dealing at things at that level.

But when from out of the blue, Paramount contacted me and said, "We're doing this restoration, would you like to take part?" I said, "Are you kidding?" I didn't believe it. And they said, "We'd like to do as a bonus, you in conversation with another filmmaker, is there any?" "Well, yes, I know exactly who it should be."

But no, I'm not kidding. This has been a big shock to me to encounter this wave of enthusiasm and interest in this movie. I got an email not long ago from Paramount saying that on Amazon, the pre-sales were setting records; it was like the top action-adventure DVD. I didn't know, I had not heard about it. So what can I say except that it's like some movie gods are looking down and smiling or something.

But I would say over the years that what I learned didn't derive so much from Dragonslayer as the work with the actors. I think as I went from film to film, I began to understand the problems that actors confront when they have to bring what you wrote to life, and I learned to listen to actors.
