Max Verstappen refused a team order to help teammate Sergio Perez.
In a post-race radio clip, Verstappen asked that his team no longer ask him to give away a position to his teammate. Verstappen claims"I gave my reasons, and I stand by it," alluding to an unknown previous discussion with the team. Perez, who was told that he would get the position just seconds later, responded to Verstappen's choice in a way that is far less cryptic:"it shows who he really is.
No matter what Verstappen says or does now, the opportunity to help Perez has passed. Unless neither scores points or the two are divided by just one spot in 9th or 10th and one takes the day's fast lap, the highest finisher of Perez and Leclerc in next weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will take second in the championship.
