Mayor Adams signs bill banning weight and height discrimination
May 11, would protect New Yorkers from discrimination on the basis of weight and height when it comes to employment, housing and access to public accommodations. The legislation provides New Yorkers with the same protections as what’s afforded to them when it comes to race, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation.
The legislation comes at a time when obesity rates across the nation continue to rise. According to a report by Center for Disease Control and Prevention,The bill was sponsored by Councilmember Shaun Abreu, who represents northern Manhattan and said that he was prompted to introduce it after gaining weight during the pandemic. He said that he was treated differently as he got heavier.
