Mitch McConnell says the Senate can’t try the president if the House doesn’t send over articles, throwing cold water on an idea with traction among conservatives
WASHINGTON—Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the chamber can’t hold a trial of President Trump if the House doesn’t send over articles of impeachment.
The idea that the Senate could hold a trial—or even dismiss impeachment charges—absent the House sending the articles has gained traction in conservative circles as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has delayed sending over the articles approved in December by the House, leaving the timing of a trial up in the air.
