The MCU's multiverse was alluded to as far back as 2013's Thor: The Dark World before it was outright mentioned in 2016's Doctor Strange. It wasn't until 2019's Avengers: Endgame that alternate timelines/universes were explored. The MCU's fourth phase has brought its multiverse front and center with WandaVision, Loki, What If..?, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Disney+'s Loki introduces audiences to concepts like variants while further fleshing out the idea of alternate timelines. Taking place"after" Avengers: Endgame, the series follows The Avengers' version of Loki circa 2012, who escapes with the Tesseract during the Avengers' time heist. After being arrested by the Time Variance Authority , Mobius M.
Following No Way Home, the MCU's multiversal madness will continue in this year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said Multiverse of Madness will"crack" open the multiverse. The Doctor Strange 2 trailer dropped before the Super Bowl and set the internet ablaze.
