MECA Día de Muertos Festival helps community honor departed loved ones
in Old Sixth Ward. During the weekend, thousands of people attended the festival, where they enjoyed traditional Mexican foods, had their faces painted and took in a remarkably diverse lineup of music and dance performances from Mexican ballet folklorico to qawwali, or Sufi devotional music.
Armando Silva, the festival chair and arts program director at MECA, which is short for Multicultural Counseling and Education through the Arts, said the organization has always celebrated Día de los Muertos, but in 2001 organizers decided a free street festival would be a more inclusive, educational way to hold its annual fundraiser than the galas of earlier years.
