Hamlette, a 5-year-old mini-pig, is a regular at the biannual Beach Sweeps run by Clean Ocean Action and has become the initiative's unofficial mascot.
Hamlette came into DeCaro’s life in February 2017 as a four-week old piglet that could fit in the palm of her hand. A staunch animal lover and owner of two rescue dogs, DeCaro said she was “looking for something a little different” in a pet when she came across a litter of baby Juliana piglets at the Meadowlands State Fair and “instantly fell in love.”

Growing up in New Jersey, DeCaro relished her family’s frequently trips to the beach but was irked by the presence of trash on the shoreline.
“I guess I wanted to meet people who have that same mindset and want to make a positive impact in the world,” DeCaro said. “That way I could be part of a group that makes a difference.” Of course, Hamlette is still a pig and pigs are notorious omnivores. If there’s food waste left behind, rest assured Hamlette will sniff it out and scarf it down. He particularly enjoys “leftover seafood,” DeCaro said. Fine palette for a pig.
