Umbrellas made from Nike windbreakers and shorts? Yes, please!

It's funny, because I didn’t study design in college. I didn't study industrial design or anything like that. I went to school originally for speech language pathology. And I'm fluent in sign language. Then while I was there, I started getting more into photography. And I had some general education classes that were more art-based, like drawing and photography. It wasn't an art school, but I was super interested in those things.

Then I applied for an apprenticeship at Reebok in my last year of college. I just found it online from doing some research and thought it sounded really interesting. So I got it somehow. I did not have that much experience, but I was fortunate. It was a yearlong internship doing graphic design, and while I was there, I started getting more into sneakers and apparel on the job, and how they're constructed.

It evolved from there, and I started to be able to hand sew things. Eventually I learned how to use machines, and that kind of changed my process. I work a lot with vintage and upcycled garments now. I try to find cool vintage, like fleece jackets, those kinds of things, and then see what I can construct out of them without cutting up anything brand new, and not having to spend a lot of money.

I’ve met a lot of people because of it. I was able to leave my job and pursue this as a career because of the relationships I've made off of Instagram. But at the same time, I’m always keeping in mind that Instagram is not permanent and can go away at any moment. So you have to be able to have real life relationships that are valuable. So I try to do a lot of panels and workshops to engage with people in real life and not keep it so much behind the screen.
