Social activist Sunitha Krishnan is pushing to have rape videos immediately removed from Whatsapp, Facebook and other tech platforms that are being used to distribute them:
, the refuge for sex trafficking victims she founded in Hyderabad, India. Krishnan goes without shoes for 3-months during the summer each year to ground herself. She doesn’t flinch as her hardened soles step on jagged stones outside Prajwala’s workshop, where rescued girls are rehabilitated and learn a trade so that they will be able to provide for themselves in the future.
“I was gang raped," says Krishnan."I became everything that a family would detest in a child. Anything like this happens and you feel victim blaming at every step, you can't walk, you can't talk, you can't sit, you can't stand, you can't socialize." Today, in addition to running Prajwala, the 4-foot-6-inch activist is advocating for the passing of an anti-trafficking bill through Indian parliament. The controversialbill has already passed Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian parliament and now needs to pass Rajya Sabha, the upper house. Krishnan believes that the bill is not perfect but is a necessary step toward minimizing sex trafficking and protecting women and girls in India.
“What we want is the prevention of circulation,” says Bhat. “If you take 36-hours to remove the videos or imagery, by that time it will have reached many people. What we want is for them to do active screening and make sure there is none available to the public.”
