Douglas Yazell, 70, is a retired aerospace engineer who worked on NASA projects from 1981 to 2011. He’s been a teacher since 2016, teaching mostly math in public high schools. During the fact-checking process before his, he was asked what got him interested in learning about our criminal justice system.
“In 2014, the book ‘Dog Whistle Politics’ by Ian Haney-López started my process of waking up to race matters in the U.S.A. and around the world,” he said. “I didn't even know that ‘law and order’ and ‘welfare cheats’ were dog whistles. Until then, if you had asked me about race, I would have avoided the subject, but if pressed, I might have said ‘I’m colorblind,’ but I didn’t have that word on the tip of my tongue.
