“By day, I’m Shaquille Smith. By zine and night, I’m Voxigma Lo.'
Shaquille has been obsessed with portraiture since they were a child. Shaquille was adopted at age nine and raised by a Black middle-class family in North Shore, Staten Island. “I grew up with a pool and driveway so that’s how you know I was a suburban kid,” Shaquille says. Soon enough, their parents divorced and they were being raised by their single mom who they claim spoiled them to death, has always been their number one fan, and accepting of their non-binary identity.
“I would draw Amy Winehouse a billion times with her huge beehive, excessive mascara … she is every artists’ dream to draw because she has so much going on,” Shaquille says with enthusiasm. “I always leaned on art and writing growing up. I remember receiving an assignment to write my own book for class and feeling so excited.”
