Meetup users revolt against $2 event fee and blame WeWork by rachsandl

, a Meetup spokesperson said the changes are a “small payment test” and that they haven’t committed to a permanent policy yet. The company denied the change is connected to WeWork’s financial troubles, saying the policy has been in the works for some time.

“Meetup is done, nobody is going to create a new group anymore. They’re just trying to wring more money out of people,” said Quincy Larson, the founder of online coding website freeCodeCamp. “They’re blowing up the community.” Larson said that the changes were like a “slap in the face” to organizers who already spend their time and money out-of-pocket to locate venues, offer food and find sponsors for some of the more formal meetups. If the changes would have gone into affect this year, Larson estimates the new pricing structure would have cost freeCodeCamp $17,200.: Stephanie Wilkinson, the founder of Meetup group Ruby In Hollywood, toldshe is being forced to shut down her group because of the new pricing model.

“It’s really sad because most of my life has been going to Meetup groups and having Meetup friends. It’s been so integral for me, so this is just so disappointing to see it turn out this way.” : Meetup was founded in 2002 and has since become a place for largely independent hobbyists and professionals for nonprofits to organize in-person gatherings. According to Meetup’s website, there are over 330,000 active groups around the world that host more than 84,000 meetups per week.
