ICYMI: Mental health care for kids becoming crisis in north, advocate says

Saskatchewan’s Advocate for Children and Youth, Lisa Broda, said the closure of Prince Albert’s child psychiatry unit shows a bigger gap in mental health care for kids in Saskatchewan, which she believes is becoming a “crisis situation.”

Prince Albert’s unit closed once in 2020 after one of the city’s two child psychiatrists died and the other retired. Andrew McLetchie, the SHA’s vice-president of Northern Integrated Health, said Prince Albert should have three child psychiatrists to meet the need in the north. He hopes to ask the Ministry of Health for that funding formally once two doctors are recruited, he said.Article contentChild psychiatrists say the unit’s closure is a blow for the north, where vast distances, limited resources and intergenerational trauma have culminated in a deep need for services.

Broda released a report earlier this year on gaps in mental health-care services for children across the province. She said one of the findings was the need for “middle” programs youth could access before they joined the waitlist for a child psychiatrist. Otherwise, Broda said, children wait so long that their problems worsen, forcing their families to go to the emergency room for help.
