Michael Andrew got fast by doing things differently. He doesn't lift weights. He always swims all-out. And he doesn't have training partners. This week, his unconventional approach could culminate in Olympic gold.
There is one Olympic swimmer who doesn’t lift weights. He doesn’t swim more than two laps of the pool at once during training sets. He rarely, if ever, practices with teammates. Despite finishing fourth in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke earlier this week, he could still come home from Tokyo with up to four medals, many of them gold.the Tokyo Olympics
. He spent his formative years practicing alone under his father-turned-coach, Peter, in a pool his family built in their backyard in Lawrence, Kan., using a novel methodology called “Ultra Short Race Pace Training” that no other swimmer on Team USA uses. This training method involves swimming thousands of short segments, over and over, at the same breakneck speed as an actual race. Andrew and his father are pretty confident it’s going to work.
“We know I’m capable of it,” said the younger Andrew in a joint interview with his father and The Wall Street Journal. “I’m so confident that I know what times I can swim because I’ve been holding it in the pool for the last couple of months. And now I don’t have to be nervous or afraid of ‘Am I prepared?’ Because I know.”
In the run up to Tokyo, Andrew has also marked himself as different for another reason. He says he is not vaccinated against Covid-19 despite contracting a mild case in December.
