Michael Bloomberg has joined the contest. How does he fare?
is a former mayor of New York City. Although he announced in March that he would not seek the Democrats' nomination for president, Mr Bloomberg was motivated to join the race by the rise of left-wing candidates such as Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, who he thinks are"not well positioned" to defeat President Donald Trump next year.
The mayor’s bid will be complicated by several factors: he is an older white man, something the Democrats seem to have enough of; he pushed controversial policies as mayor; and he is a billionaire, which may alienate the party’s left-leaning voters. But Mr Bloomberg will be able to use some of his $50bn net worth, earned primarily through his large financial-services company, to make up for lost time.
