Padres walk eight times in first four innings, have just five hits but stop losing streak at five games
Michael Wacha and walks were enough for their first victory in six games, 4-0 over the Royals on a night that included the potential loss of Manny Machado for a time after he was hit on the left hand by a pitch.Wacha did not allow a hit until the second pitch of the eighth inning, and the Padres walked eight times in the first 3⅔ innings.
“Yeah, it is a good opportunity,” Jake Cronenworth said before the game, almost grudgingly. “But at the same time, this is the big leagues. These guys on the Royals, they’re really good players. So it’s not one of those things that you can just go out there and think you’re gonna win this because you show up. you got to go do it.”
The game against the last-place team in the American League Central proved nothing, except maybe that a team does not have to swing its way out of a funk. Six straight batters reached base with one out in the second inning. After walks by Trent Grisham and Austin Nola, Tatis lined a single through the right side to score Grisham and move Nola to third. Jake Cronenworth walked to load the bases before Keller sailed a 1-1 slider up that struck Machado square on the hand. He slumped in pain as Nola trotted home.
