Microsoft's Xbox revenue is plummeting. Here's why that's fine:
We knew it was coming, and now it's here. The console industry is entering into a transition: both Sony and Microsoft have confirmed the existence of the PS5 and Xbox's Project Scarlett, development on major AAA current-gen games is slowing down, and people are starting to look to the future where their hardware purchases are concerned.
Don't expect hardware sales to magically start climbing again over the next year. Those numbers are going to keep going down as we move closer to the launch of next-generation consoles, but keep an eye on subscriptions. The Xbox One is increasingly going to become Xbox's past, but subscriptions could well be its future.I'm a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, The New Republic, IGN.com, Wired and more.
