According to costume designer Andrea Flesch, wearing the giant dress was not the highlight of Florence Pugh’s experience on the Midsommar set

is a visually stunning trip filled with rich sets and flower crowns galore. But one piece in the film stands out from the rest: Near the end of the film,’s__ character, Dani, winds up wearing a magnificently giant gown adorned, from top to bottom, with colorful blooms. It’s a showstopping piece, fittingly chosen for anwith an even more intense ending.

With all of its adornments, the dress eventually got a bit cumbersome to wear—“so sometimes between [takes, Pugh] was sitting down on her little chair we were putting under the hoop,” Flesch said. But that wasn’t the only part of the ensemble; it also came with a train and a flower crown, which proved equally challenging to bring to life. “It became also very heavy, the flower crown, in the end,” Flesch said. “It was very hard for [Pugh] to wear it.” The original design wouldn’t even stay on Pugh’s head. “It was incredibly beautiful,” Flesch said, “but we had to make it smaller.”

Wearing a giant, heavy dress was not the highlight of Pugh’s experience on set, Flesch admitted. “But I think she knew that it would work for the movie,” Flesch said. “She was very brave.” And besides, given everything Dani has gone through at that point in the movie, perhaps the physical struggle lent the performance even more realism. So “in a way,” Flesch said, “it was helpful.”

Another of the movie’s most important costumes is the bear suit one character eventually wears before meeting a gruesome end. As convincing as the hollowed-out carcass looks, it isin fact, an actual animal; Flesch said it was an artificial piece made from furs by a separate Hungarian prosthetics team. That, too, took weeks, she said.’s costume work cannot be found in any individual piece; it flows through the entire movie.
