WASHINGTON—The House Oversight Committee’s investigation into the Trump administration’s 2018 policy that separated children from their parents at the border revealed that many children were kept in government custody away from adults far longer than previously known.
From April to June 2018, thousands of children were separated from their parents when they sought asylum at the border. Many of these people were from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras and sought refuge from gang violence, hunger, poverty and corruption.
