The migrant rescue ship Alan Kurdi is making its way towards the Italian port of Lampedusa despite a warning from the country's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini that it is closed, the NGO Sea-Eye says
It sets the scene for another standoff with Italian authorities, who are attempting to prevent migrant rescue boats operating in the Mediterranean from docking in the country's ports.Sea-Eye says its vessel -- which was named in honor of the Syrian boy whose body washed ashore at the height of the 2015 migrant crisis -- is in international waters with 65 migrants on board."The Guardia di Finanza [Italian police] came by in person to deliver Salvini's decree: The port is closed.
"In view of the intolerable hygienic conditions aboard, the Alex has declared a state of emergency and it's sailing towards Lampedusa," the charity announced Saturday. The NGO subsequently reported that the vessel had landed on the island. Donations flood in for migrant ship captain arrested for docking in ItalySalvini said Friday that none of the migrants on the ship would dock on Lampedusa, and warned that"law enforcement agencies are ready to intervene.
