Miles Maiden installed solar panels, built saunas and sold oriental rugs before finding his niche as the inventor of a water-purification device small enough to fit in a pocket.
Mr. Maiden’s battery-powered SteriPEN, introduced in 2001 and resembling a pen, uses ultraviolet light to sterilize water.
