The COVID-19 pandemic forced young Latinas to reschedule this rite of passage, thus turning their quinces into 16th and even 17th birthday parties.
The choice to reschedule a quinceañera is “a very big deal,” according to Barrio. It breaks tradition and forces young women to delay a culturally significant moment in their life — rescheduling is not something they would have considered doing prior to the pandemic. Barrios said she was able to help her clients understand that their future parties would still have the look and feel of a quinceañera, despite not taking place on their 15th birthdays.
Aliyah J. also had her quinceañera impacted by the pandemic. After her grandfather, her father figure, died during the pandemic, Aliyah’s quince was cancelled altogether. “It is very hard for me to even go to a quince and not feel an emotion toward it because I know I will never get that experience,” Aliyah says. Still, she says she’s grateful that her mother helped plan an alternative. “I am so so thankful for my mom for making this possible for me especially due to the circumstances.”
