Minnesota Marathon Couple Aims for Top Spots in New York City and Olympic Trials

The speedy couple is hoping the hills and elevation change of the NYC course will prepare them for Atlanta in February.

While they are preparing for the same event now, Tyler and Katy took slightly different paths to transition from college running to elite marathoning. Calling from their home in Minneapolis, where they train with Team USA Minnesota, the Jermanns share how they’ve learned to balanceThough they met in 2010 at Iowa State, Tyler and Katy didn’t start dating in 2017, after they’d graduated with a dual degree in mathematics and finance and a degree in elementary education, respectively.

During their time as Cyclones, Katy was the more successful one of the pair, winning five All-American honors as well as two NCAA All-Region honors. As a redshirt senior,33:09.63 for 10K and 15:52.72 for 5K. After graduating in 2015, she moved to Minneapolis, where she accepted an elementary school teaching job and joined Team USA Minnesota. Around the same time, Tyler was making a move out of the Midwest.15:11.13 for 5K and 30:36.21 for 10K in college.

During this time, Tyler kept in touch with Katy, who was excelling in shorter distances in Minnesota. In January 2017, the couple officially began dating, and Tyler moved to Minneapolis and joined Team USA Minnesota later that summer. Almost exactly a year later, the couple got married—and the joint marathon training began.“It wasn’t a huge leap for me, since I’ve gradually increased my mileage over the years,” Katy said. “When I started in college, I was running 30 miles a week.

Tyler, on the other hand, runs between 120 and 130 miles per week for marathon training. To prepare for Houston and New York, the couple met their teammates at at 7:30 a.m. three times per week for two—such as a 90-minute tempo run alternating between three minutes “fast” and three minutes “float” —plus a Sunday long run.

On the other days of the week, Katy and Tyler ran together at 8:30 a.m., then met up again at 5 p.m. for a run or a“Sometimes we fell asleep at 8:30 p.m.,” Tyler said. “We were in the same boat with tiredness. It’s definitely something to bond over.”
