Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie details an alternate opening for the film that would have brought back Alec Baldwin's Alan Hunley. Tom Cruise returns as superspy Ethan Hunt for the seventh installment in the long-running action franchise, this time taking on a rogue AI known as the Entity.
Although Hunley died during the events of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, McQuarrie explains that the latest sequel almost opened with a flashback of Ethan's time with Hunley. Check out McQuarrie's full comment below: “And you realize it’s him counseling Ethan. You’re seeing a glimpse into the friendship of these two characters that existed prior to Fallout. And you cut and Tom is standing at his grave, having heard the words of wisdom from Alec, and he’s just looking at a gravestone that says 'Hunley'. And that notion of Alec Baldwin being a spirit guide to Ethan in his memory was a very, very early idea to the story, something I was keenly interested in.
