"Pass That Dutch" was another crowdpleaser, but "Lose Control" is what gave the viewers at home the most unapologetically intense dance party of the night as the camera cut to Halsey, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Bebe Rexha, Taylor Swift, Todrick Hall, Lizzo and more losing their minds to the 2005 hit.
After Elliott left the stage, Cardi B came out proudly bearing the guest of honor's Video Vanguard award in hand. She hyped up the crowd for the honoree: "Give it up for Missy Elliott, that wasGive it up for Missy right now, I'm so excited to be here to celebrate this living legend!" She went on to praise Elliott's trailblazing before passing off the mic to the very first female rapper to ever win the Video Vanguard award.
"I promised I wouldn't cry because I cry at every awards," she began, "But this Michael Jackson video vanguard award means so much to me. I have worked diligently for over two decades, and I never thought that I would be standing up here, receiving this award. It means so much to me, I promise you, it don't go unnoticed, the support and love y'all have shown me over the years.
After thanking God, her mother, Timbaland, Hype Williams, her label, her glam squad and a number of her collaborators, she gave a special shout-out to Janet Jackson -- "I love you, thank you for being such a great friend!" -- and her own video idols . She also paid a poignant tribute to Aaliyah , and wrapped her speech by thanking the dancers by her side and the dance community at large: "When y'all get on the stage with these artists, y'all are not just props. Y'all are the icing on the cake. Y'all are the beat to the heart. I dedicate this to every dance community out there."
