Exclusive: Mario and Donkey Kong creator Miyamoto reveals what surprised him about combining the two worlds in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Shigeru Miyamoto explains why he was surprised by how well the world of Donkey Kong fits into the world of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Miyamoto created both Donkey Kong and Mario, with the mustachioed Italian plumber first debuting in the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game. Miyamoto was not only a producer on The Super Mario Bros. Movie but is also the general manager of Nintendo and has been instrumental to the success of both Donkey Kong and Mario.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Miyamoto reveals one of the most surprising aspects of the animated movie was combining the worlds of Donkey Kong and Mario. He explains that for him, the two worlds have always been separate. However, it seems this movie has changed his perspective. Check out what Miyamoto had to say below:

In this past, there was the the Mario group, and then Donkey Kong was a separate thing in my mind. But looking back, there are games like Mario Party where they appear together — to the point where I was thinking, "Why am I separating them?" And when the idea of bringing them together came up, we just thought it was a great idea.
Why Donkey Kong And Super Mario Bros. Are Such A Perfect Fit The Super Mario Bros. Movie explores multiple worlds, including the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser's Kingdom, and the Jungle Kingdom, which is essentially Donkey Kong Island. Donkey Kong and Mario have always been linked, from Mario's debut in the Gorilla's Arcade Game to Donkey Kong appearing in video games like Mario Party.
If The Super Mario Bros. Movie spawns a full cinematic world with sequels and spin-offs, Donkey Kong and the Jungle Kingdom are perfectly set up for their own stories. Seth Rogen wants to bring Donkey Kong Country to the big screen, which would be a perfect opportunity to dive into Donkey Kong as the lead. However, combining the worlds of Donkey Kong and Mario opens the door to bringing characters from Mario into Donkey Kong's stories like never before, and vice versa.
