When Major League Baseball begins spring training games later this month, the sport will have a new look thanks rules changes being implemented for the 2023 season.
After being implemented in the minor leagues in recent years, a pitch clock is among the rules changes coming to Major League Baseball during the 2023 season.
With upcoming changes that border from radical — the implementation of a pitch clock — to subtle — the bases will increase in size from 15 to 18 inches — MLB Network is airing"MLB Tonight: What's New in 2023" at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday to familiarize fans with the changes to the sport.• Pitchers will have 15 seconds to throw a pitch with the bases empty and 20 seconds with a runner on base. If the time elapses without a pitch, pitchers are charged a ball.
• Pitchers are allowed two"disengagements," which include pickoff attempts or stepping off the rubber during a plate appearance. But if a runner advances during the plate appearance, the number is reset to two. If a third pickoff attempt is made, the runner is allowed to advance one base. Mound visits, injury timeouts and timeouts requested by the batting team do not count toward a pitcher's disengagements.
• The defensive shift — a staple of the Astros' success of recent seasons — has been eliminated, with all four infielders mandated to be on the infield dirt or grass with at least two on each side of second base. Infielders are also not allowed to switch sides. If the defense is not properly aligned when the pitch is thrown, the batting team has the choice of an automatic ball or the result of the play. Four-outfielder alignments are also prohibited.
• First, second and third base increase in size by 3 inches. The objective is to give players more room to operate and cut down on collisions. As for the impact on stolen bases, the changes will reduce the distance between first and second base and between second and third by 4½ inches. Home plate will remain the same.
