Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In a surprise announcement, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirms Moana 2 is on the way, and it'll arrive this year. The original Moana was released in 2016 and earned positive reviews on its way to a $629.6 million worldwide gross. It is consistently one of the most popular titles on Disney+ as well. The studio previously announced a Moana television show was in the works for the streamer, but those plans have changed.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical “Moana 2” takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
The original Moana was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, and co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. Lin-Manuel Miranda also contributed to the music, though he does not appear to be returning for the sequel.
