Alabama has experienced a 16% increase in drug overdose deaths between April 2021 and April 2022. That’s considerably higher than the national average of 7% during that same time period, according to CDC. Mobile's DA candidates have plans to address that.

“We work side-by-side with our District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and our federal law enforcement partners,” said Mobile County Sheriff’s Captain Paul Burch, a Republican who is running for sheriff in November. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 107,622 people died from drug overdoses in 2021 in the U.S., with 66.2% or 71,238 deaths tied to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.
Blackwood said the District Attorney’s Fentanyl Crisis Response Team is doing that by bringing together the District Attorney’s Office with the Drug Education Council, Mobile Police Department, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, the Gulf Coast High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area , the Alabama Legislature and the Harrison College of Pharmacy at Auburn University.
“As your next District Attorney, I pledge to continue this fight against those causing the fentanyl epidemic, along with all of our partners in law enforcement, government and the community,” Blackwood said.
