Not to take anything away from other members of their wedding party, but Lucy LaPalermo and her fiance Mike Segneri have a special place in their hearts for the cute flower girl, a pit-lab mix.

No doubt young Birdie will, at least momentarily, steal the show on Saturday at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora as this adorable 3-year-old comes prancing down the outdoor aisle wearing a garland of artificial petunias – fake ones because, well, as the bride notes, “she’s got some allergies.”But the pit-lab mix - named by Segneri, a top golfer at the club - certainly represents what experts tell me is a growing trend in weddings these days.
LaPalermo and Segneri, both in their early 30s and engaged 15 months, consider themselves in that category and “always knew Birdie would be part” of their wedding day, the bride-to-be tells me.Sarah Rodriguez, who owns the Winfield-based Sarah Kathleen Events, points to social media as another reason for this uptick.
While it’s easy to get excited about ways to include your fine furry friend in the festivities, “not all of them are good ideas,” points out Rodriguez, who tries to warn clients when she thinks their plans could lead to unforeseen consequences or add more anxiety on a day where things do not always go as planned even with two-legged guests.
