Castillo earns $13 an hour and works 40 hours a week. His salary, before deductions, comes out to $1,040 every two weeks.Castillo doesn’t make enough money to pay for a car, so early every morning he walks 30 minutes to get to work in time for the start of his shift, which begins at 6 a.m.His salary is not enough to rent an apartment by himself. “It’s a tough way to make a life,” said Lorie Kleinfield, a 54-year-old Mexican woman who worked as a waitress at a restaurant in Prosper. Henderson said raising the minimum wage and eliminating practices like subminimum wages for tips would be significant steps toward greater equity in Texas.Lack of education and not speaking English are the most significant barriers preventing Latinos from finding better job opportunities.
Joseph, an immigrant from Peru, stressed that learning English is the most crucial step for Hispanics to find better-paying jobs.
