At least 19 transgender Americans have been murdered so far in 2019
and the fear it has stoked among this most marginalized group. A trans woman in Memphis, Kayla Gore, told the newspaper she knows better than to let her guard down. “It’s always in the forefront of our minds, when we’re leaving home, going to work, going to school,” she said. “Guys were flirting with me at the gas station, and the first thought was, ‘This could go horribly wrong.’”The coverage is especially timely as thousands of trans Americans gather in Washington, D.C.
Beverly Tillery is the executive director of the Anti-Violence Project in New York, and a woman of color. And she told the newspaper there's no mistaking what's going on.And yet the public at large isn't aware. Unfortunately, there are people paying attention: those prone to violence and murder. “The increased visibility is a signal for them that they need to double down in fighting back,” Tillery said.
