MsMarvel star Iman Vellani responds to the fan backlash regarding the changes made to her character's powers for the MCU show: 'For all I care, she could shoot sausages out of her fingers, as long as she still goes on that self-discovery journey.'

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani responds to the fan backlash regarding the change to the character's powers in the MCU. Set to join the ever-growing roster of MCU Disney+ shows, Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American Captain Marvel superfan, who struggles to fit in at school until she gains powers of her own. Initial trailers for Ms. Marvel tease a show geared towards slightly younger audiences and an impressive mix of live-action and animation.

While many fans remain excited about the show, Ms. Marvel makes a key change to the character's power from the comics, which some have taken issue with. In the original comic books, the hero has the ability to"embiggen" herself, which includes enlarging and extending all of her limbs, as well as superhuman healing abilities. In the show, however, Kamala has energy-based powers , which appear to stem from a metal wristband.

"I’m very possessive [of Kamala]. I think we stay true to what the comics brought. The themes have always been about identity and about marrying the 50 million things that make Kamala. For all I care, she could shoot sausages out of her fingers, as long as she still goes on that self-discovery journey."

Much like how Spider-Man deals with themes of adolescence like puberty and struggling to fit in as a young person, Ms. Marvel is very much about one teenager's journey of self-discovery. Vellani's comments affirm that, while Ms. Marvel's powers have changed for her introduction into the MCU, the core aspects of the character and her story will remain faithful to the source material.

While Vellani's response is sure to alleviate some fan concerns regarding Kamala's introduction into the MCU, Ms. Marvel's powers as they are depicted in the comics are unique and clearly something fans were looking forward to seeing brought to life on-screen. Kamala's new powers are more in line with Captain Marvel's energy-based powers, a decision that was likely made to allow for a more seamless team-up in next year's The Marvels.
