In a new mural in downtown Phoenix, Wendell Scott — the first full-time Black NASCAR driver — is depicted sitting in front of a race car.
At the corner of Grant and First streets in downtown Phoenix, there’s an unassuming brick building, painted tan as if to fade into its surroundings.
Unlike King, who needs no introduction, Scott’s accomplishments are listed on the mural: Inducted into NASCAR Hall of Fame 2015, competed in 495 cup races, wins historic race Dec. 1, 1963. The project was sparked in the summer of 2020, when the Phoenix City Council denied a request from Shining Light Foundation founder Gizette Knight to paint a mural reading “Black Lives Matter” on in front of the Footprint Center at Jefferson and Second streets.
To McPherson, the solution is better than the initial proposal of one Black Lives Matter mural. Two summers ago, he was driving cross-country and stopped for gas and food in Kansas City when he noticed a depiction of Negro League baseball legend Buck O’Neil on the side of a building.
