The No. 1 Gamecocks have taken on several top-tier opponents without dropping a single game.
It’s been quite the month of February already in the women’s college basketball world.
Sunday saw a delightful pre-Super Bowl slate, highlighted by the last two undefeated squaring off. No. 1 South Carolina crushed No. 3 LSU 88-64, sending a nationwide statement that the defending champions should still be the overwhelming favorites to win it all again. And, really, it’s tough to know who looks strong as a challenger. Stanford had a dominant win at Arizona on Thursday night in front of a raucous crowd, but the Cardinal has dropped games at USC and Washington. Sure, Stanford has come closer than anyone to beating the Gamecocks, but it lost that November showdown.
Maybe Indiana is the challenger, though the Hoosiers have a tough game at Ohio State on Monday. Maybe it’s still LSU, though it’s tough to tell after Sunday. Maybe it’s UConn, which gave South Carolina a good fight a week ago despite health issues … but the Huskies lost back-to-back games for the first time in 30 years right after that.
Everyone’s beating each other up in the toughest conferences. Only South Carolina looks sensational. Could that may make the national champion feel like a foregone conclusion? Sure.
