'At 16, as I taped the name of my spiritually adopted fetus (Virginia, after a Rolling Stones song) to the classroom wall, the battiness of what we were doing was not lost on me.'

— it was full of disquieting moments. The presentation had its intended effect . I was repulsed, and I was terrified.

Belief is fed and informed by our ecosystems; familial, societal, economic. The specific ecosystem I grew up in, at the intersection of so-called “southern values” and Catholicism, was rife with reasons for women to deny, suppress, and even. This suffocation isn’t limited to women, but the gendered mores that are still dominant in much of the South today only reinforce correspondingly sexist views held by the church.

In my case, I feel especially fortunate that I was able to disinherit this culture of hypocrisy and self-castigation before I myself got an abortion, at a clinic just a few miles from the one I was sent to protest outside of as a teenager. After years of abstinence-only sex education, to say this turn of events was unexpected is perhaps a moot point. Terminating that pregnancy was, without a doubt, an incredibly emotional decision, and not one I took at all lightly.
