I think I’m very good at this fatherhood thing, and I have spent my share of Father’s Days in self-imposed isolation because I was absolutely exhausted. It doesn’t mean I hate my kids or that I don’t want to spend time with them—it simply meant that I had to recharge my batteries.
Also, my local playground was overrun with dads and their kiddos during Mother’s Day—most likely because the moms wanted to engage in some self-care and their partners obliged. This is completely normal as far as I’m concerned. You say he’s a good dad, provider, and partner—so that’s what you should be focusing on. Everyone needs to rest, and it’s good that he is able to articulate that need instead of subscribing to “man up/hustle culture.” By providing him with this time to relax, it’s going to make him a better dad and parenting partner to you now and in the future.We live in a state where recreational marijuana is legal. My husband is a frequent user, which I have no problem with.
