Talks between union and hospital leaders appear to have failed. A strike is now imminent.
But union officials did not file a required 11-day strike notice — which would have targeted a July 21 work stoppage — because they were optimistic negotiations would result in an agreement, according to Judy Danella, president of United Steel Workers Local 4-200 and a registered nurse at the hospital. Now a notice is expected to go out Monday with a strike likely to occur on Aug. 3 or Aug. 4, barring an agreement.
The union has said additional staffing remains the top issue, though the nurses are also seeking a pay hike, retirement benefits and a cap on insurance costs. “This includes contracts with national nursing agencies to ensure that hospital operations are maintained, and patient care is delivered,” the statement said.
