The average start time for high schools statewide in New Jersey is 7:50 a.m. Pending legislation would ban high school classes before 8:30 a.m.
Don’t hit snooze! Students at two New Jersey high schools have to be in their seats for a 7 a.m. start time, the earliest in the state with more than a dozen other high schools ringing the first bell before 7:15 a.m., state Department of Education data shows.
Those start times are early compared to others in the state, an NJ Advance Media analysis found. The average start time for high schools statewide is 7:50 a.m., nearly an hour later than the earliest schools. There’s been a growing push in recent years to move high school start times later, with proponents saying teenagers need to be able to sleep in more.
“It is certainly true that getting good sleep is supportive in terms of cognition, learning, and mental health,” Dell’Angelo said. “However, there are other variables that can disrupt children’s sleep. If they stay up late on their phones, playing video games, even reading – they might not get enough sleep even with later start times.”
