The state Board of Education recognized outstanding educators at its meeting Wednesday, including superintendents, principals, teachers, and school board administrators.

For such work, the New Jersey Association of School Administrators last month named William T. Smith state superintendent of the year, an honor announced during Wednesday’s state board of education meeting. Among principals, Christopher Turnbull of Bear Tavern Elementary in the Hopewell Valley School District was recognized as a Visionary Principal of the Year on the elementary school level. Karen Bingert, head of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, praised Turnbull for creating a trout habitat in the school’s lobby and focusing on environmental education.
Also honored was Stacy Garvey, the school board administrator for the Midland Park School District. Garvey, who became a school board administrator in 1997, brings a keen sense of humor to the job, according to Susan Young, executive director of the state Association of School Business Officials.
